The Problem
Founded in 1860 Bloxham School—The Small School with a Great Spirit—wanted to address the rising cost of dealing with food waste and reduce the schools impact on the environment..
Alex Linnington, Assistant Burser explains:
We’d been using macerators to dispose of around 180 litres of food waste each day but wanted to reduce our environmental impact. In 2008 we began our search for an alternative, cost-effective solution.
The Solution
We looked at options such as anaerobic digestion but found this to be cost prohibitive and it would further increase our environmental impact due to the need to transport the food waste.
In 2011 we discovered the Waste-2-Water machine. The payback calculations convinced our Finance Bursar that this investment was impossible to refuse!
Waste–2-Water uses a bio-enzymatic formula that is completely safe for drains and sewage systems, this formula breaks down the food waste into grey water, which is safely disposed of through the drainage system.
The Result
Alex Linnington has the final word:
Our cost savings on labour are over £6,000 per year, and, as the Waste-2-Water system uses less water than a macerator we’re saving there too.
We’re also saving around £400 per year on external drains maintenance.
Using a macerator meant that grease traps and drains needed cleaning regularly, since installing Waste-2-Water we have cut that out completely.
Our cost savings on labour are over £6,000 per year, and, as the Waste-2-Water system uses less water than a macerator we’re saving there too.
