We love a bit of good news at Waste2, especially when the weather’s turning. So we’re especially happy to announce that we’ve been shortlisted for the Nesta Waste Reduction Challenge.
Nesta, for those who don’t know, is an independent charity with a mission to help people and organisations bring great ideas to life. And they’ve turned their attention to the waste sector. What caught their eye was a WRAP report about waste which states:
- We throw away more than 7 million tonnes of food and drink every year from our homes – most of which could have been safely consumed
- UK hospitality sector (hotels, pubs, restaurants and quick service restaurants) could save £724 million a year by tackling food waste
The challenge set by Nesta is for companies or organisation to provide innovation that achieves the biggest measureable reduction in waste
As you know, food waste is our specialty and when we saw Nesta’s challenge, we knew we were up to taking it on. Our Waste-2-Water system has been successfully helping a variety of companies to reduce their food waste and carbon footprint for some time.
For the last two years, Waste2, has been working with people like the NHS, the Prison Sector, Shopping centres, schools, and more. We’ve built relationships and have successfully helped them all to reduce their waste and their carbon footprint. It’s for this reason that we made it into the semi-finals of the Waste Reduction Challenge.
The Nesta Waste Reduction Challenge is a great way for us to demonstrate that we have what it takes. And with the finalists being announced in January 2013, it would be a great way to start our year.
